Ask a group of people what their new year’s resolution is, and at least half will say to eat healthier. Eating healthy is a ubiquitous new year’s resolution for a good reason. The start of a new year can motivate you to make your health a priority and gives you the push to start your year out on the right foot.

But starting a healthy eating journey can be difficult. Knowing where and how to start can be confusing and intimidating in itself, so if eating healthy is one of your new years’ resolutions, look no further:

Eat whole foods
Eating healthy may mean you have to spend more time in the kitchen, but it’ll be worth it. Eating real, whole foods instead of processed ones is a great way to start eating healthier. Whole foods are loaded with the nutrition we need in their purest form.

Grocery shop smart
AKA- make a healthy grocery list BEFORE you go grocery shopping. And oh yeah, don’t go grocery shopping if you’re hungry. Make a list of healthy foods, including meals and snacks, and make sure you stick to the list while you shop.

Plan ahead of time
Make a list of some ideas for healthy dinners so that you always have a few options on hand. Having a list of meals you know you like will also make grocery shopping easier and quicker.

Use smaller plates
Often if we use a big plate, we feel the need to fill up that entire space, when in reality, it’s way too much food. Use a smaller plate and if you decide you’re still hungry afterward, then go for seconds.

Eat when you’re hungry, stop when you’re satisfied
It seems obvious, but often we eat until we’re stuffed. You shouldn’t feel so full after a meal that you can’t do anything. You should feel energized. Eating when you’re hungry and stopping when you’re satisfied guarantees you’ll be at the top of your game after every meal.

Have healthy desserts
Eating healthy doesn’t mean you have to give up dessert. Just swap out your ice cream sundaes for high-quality chocolate instead. Or better yet, take some time to bake your own healthy versions of the sweets you love.

Meal prep
A great way to start eating healthy is to meal prep. Meal prepping is a lifesaver for those who often find themselves short on time. Skip the unhealthy fast-food restaurants and meal prep instead- it might take a little bit longer, but it will be worth it.

Treat yourself in moderation
Eating healthy doesn’t mean you have to cut out everything you love from your diet entirely. Everything can be enjoyed in moderation. You can still eat your favorite cookies or chips, just don’t make it an everyday thing. The only way to make eating healthy long term is to treat yourself once in a while.
