(CNN) – A new study confirms eating healthy can reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease, but you don’t have to follow strict guidelines to have an impact.

The research was published on Monday in the journal Jama Internal Medicine.

More than 200,000 health care professionals were asked to report dietary information every two to four years for up to 32 years. The research suggests that people can enjoy some flexibility in their diets so long as they continue to follow “healthy eating patterns.”

According to the study, a healthy eating pattern includes a variety of vegetables, fruits, and grains at least half of which are whole grains.

Healthy patterns also include fat-free or low-fat dairy, a variety of proteins, and oils.

But people should limit saturated and trans fats and sodium.

Researchers say they found people can choose different healthy eating patterns based on their personal food traditions or preferences to help prevent cardiovascular disease

The findings support the 2015/20-20 dietary guidelines for Americans.
