Jessie James Decker: Health and Cooking Tips from Jessie James Jecker – Parade

Jessie James Decker is a busy mom of 3 who is also an integral part of country music. The singer, 31, recently attended the Country Music Association Awards in Nashville.

“It’s great to get to support each other with your peers and really celebrate being an artist and a creator,” she told Parade.com in an exclusive interview.

Besides music, Decker, who is married to retired NFL player Eric Decker, has also created a burgeoning lifestyle brand, which includes her Nashville store Kittenishand plans for a follow-up to her book, Just Jessie: My Guide to Love, Life, Family, and Foodout next year.

She told us all about her wellness tips and tricks and how she’s reflecting on 10 years as an artist—and inspiring others.

What is your health/wellness philosophy?

My health philosophy is everything in moderation. I’ve always practiced a healthy lifestyle. I’m not a big fan of ‘let’s do it for a week’ type stuff. My family is very healthy. We watch what we eat and it makes a huge difference. I cook all the time, we rarely go out to eat. And when we go to the grocery store, we try to choose foods that are organic and dye-free. 

What is your day-to-day nutrition like?

I have coffee first thing in the morning—I drink a lot of coffee! When I get hungry I’ll have a slice of toast with salted butter. For lunch I’ll make something, I make a lot of turkey chili or lentil soup this time of year. In the spring and summer, it’s a chicken salad. I usually always cook dinner. Last night I made a big family meal of bolognese with fresh arugula salad with homemade dressing and tomatoes.

Do you take any supplements?

I take a multivitamin, and I’ll sometimes do an IV drip if I’ve been on a trip or on a plane for a long time to get some extra fluids and vitamins. 

Do you exercise? And if so, what do you enjoy doing?

I go through waves. I have weeks where I am super fired-up about exercising, where I’m working out 3 times a week. But I’m so busy running around and chasing my kids, somedays I feel like that’s all the cardio I need. I’m really big on listening to your body. You know when your body needs an extra exercise session or if you need to rest. 

Are there any health trends you’re currently obsessed with?

I always want to educate myself on new studies and new things that come around. Recently I’ve learned about food colors and dyes, and how your body can’t process or break them down. But I’m big on being intuitive and paying attention to what works and what doesn’t work. For example, when I eat ground beef, it doesn’t really agree with me, but my body is just fine with a pork chop. As far as food goes and diet, everything in moderation. You can eat a chocolate chip cookie and have bread when it’s in your bread basket. Food is conversation, and the heart of the home in my opinion.

We know you love to cook! Where do your recipes come from?

I just invent them or make them up in the fly. I often look at what I have in my pantry and throw something together. Eric will say, “Add it to the list!”—meaning add it to rotation if it’s a good one. We do a lot of pastas and soups. I have a new cookbook coming out next year, and there will be a lot of those recipes in there. My mom is also an amazing cook and I get ideas from her.

Are you working on new music?

I’m working on it and have some really amazing news coming soon … a new chapter is coming! I’ve partnered with with Dermira for the What’s Your Cue program that helps people overcome their obstacles. I just want to inspire others, and we align in that together. I’ve been able to get together with rising artists and hear about their obstacles, what they’re going through as an artist, and talk about their dreams. It’s made me think about my younger self and the hunger you have and how badly you want to make it, and all the obstacles. I had really great mentors when I was just getting started, so I always want to give them the best advice that I’ve had. I had my first record deal 3 months after I graduated high school, so I’ve done this for over 10 years. I’ve definitely carved my own way and created my own path, and that’s what I tell other artists: don’t feel like you have to follow a trend on how someone in the industry got from A to Z. Be you and use your own path.
