US President Donald Trump was reportedly furious over a decision last week to allow 14 Americans who tested positive for the new coronavirus to return home without his consultation.
The US government sent two chartered planes to Japan to evacuate more than 300 American passengers from a cruise ship, the Diamond Princess, that was hit by the new coronavirus outbreak.
After the passengers left the vessel and got on buses bound for Tokyo’s Haneda Airport, test results reportedly came back showing 14 of them were infected.
The US State Department is said to have decided to bring them home after concluding that the virus could be prevented from spreading to other passengers by seating the infected people in an isolated area.
The Washington Post reported on Friday that administration officials said Trump complained the decision could damage his administration’s handling of the response.
The President agreed to the airlift on the basis that patients who had symptoms or had tested positive would remain in Japan.
Trump reportedly remains concerned that any large-scale outbreak in the US could hurt his 2020 presidential election bid.
